Watching this movie years ago, I was fascinated all the way through and still wanted more at the end. I haven't had that experience many times in all the movies I've seen. I remember an Antonioni film that was similarly riveting. This film was not just entertainment. It was an education for a curious English speaker who found the barriers to approaching Dante just too high. I was troubled to find that this film has been so thoroughly scrubbed from the market. Now, this film isn't for the sensitive. I won't try to list all the ways it could upset someone. In this interview with the artist and director, one of them mentioned the extra audio tracks on the DVD, one of which provided a scene by scene discussion with Dante scholar Peter Hawkins (44:23). This extra audio track was critical for giving the viewer confidence in how this modern telling of Inferno related to Dante's original. As much of a shame as it is that this movie disappeared, to re-release the film without the extra audio tracks, or to edit it to please sensitive viewers would be worse than nothing at all. I also have to say that although I enjoyed the puppetry in Monty Python, I probably would never have been able to take this art form seriously without this film. I suggest adding something to the imdb entry for this film to lead people to this interview.
